"Yeah, I know." Kane stepped from the passenger seat and landed easily on the ground. Their wag was second in line, with two more of Remar's wags after them. There was no disguising the fact they were there to keep close watch over Grant and Kane.

The wag riders glanced at Kane but made no move to pursue him

After the last wag had passed, Kane followed Remar. The old man stayed low in the grass, easing toward the buck among the trees. Emulating Remar's caution, Kane stayed low and moved slowly. The buck had excellent eyesight and hearing, but the convoy's passage drew most of its attention and clattered noisily past.

Forty yards farther on, the buck twisted its muzzle. The tall antlers raked the leaves of the branches overhead. A foreleg quivered as it glanced at the two men.

Remar turned to stone for a few heartbeats, the wind blowing the fringe of hair around his head. Kane froze, as well, knowing the old man's attention was as fully on the buck as the animal's was on the two men.

"It's been a while since I had venison," Remar whispered. He eased himself to ground and slipped a .303 bolt-action hunting rifle from his shoulder. The safety snapped off with a click. The old man took careful sight through the scope mounted on the rifle.

Kane held his position less than three feet from Remar. His mind was still filled with questions, but he hadn't gotten many answers over the past few miles they'd traveled from the pass. Remar had proved plenty willing to talk, but the man didn't talk about things he didn't want to discuss.

There had been no clarification as to how Kane and Grant were going to be taken to the Lost Valley of Wiy Tukay without knowing where it was.

The buck locked into position, staring straight at them Kane heard Remar let out half his breath and hold it. The rifle thundered and the recoil shoved Remar's shoulder back. The buck staggered for a moment, shook its head, then gathered its legs and sprinted. Birds exploded from the tops of the trees and took flight.

"Bastard bad luck!" Remar exclaimed, pulling the bolt back. "I hit the son of a bitch, but I didn't get a chilling shot. Damn thing will probably run a mile before it gives up and dies, and I still ain't going to have anything to show for it."

Kane dropped his shotgun to the ground. "Let me see the rifle."

Remar handed it over. "She's a good blaster, Kane, but you're talking about a running target."

Kane took the heavy weight of the rifle into his arms, slipped the sling around his left forearm and pulled it to his shoulder. He kept both eyes open, the right focusing through the scope while he used his left to keep the buck in sight. Trying to find the fleeing animal through the powerful scope only would have proved impossible.

The buck sprinted for the heights above the trees, bounding in great strides.

"Waste of a good bullet," Remar commented.
